Less than a month away!
April 23, 2009As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, things are really falling into place for the First Annual Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival.
We’ve got a great group of bands, many of who are playing at a reduced rate in an effort to help raise money for the college scholarship we’re putting together in honor of Walker and Edwin.
From the rockin’ raucous that is the Kings of Belmont (Charlottesville) to the nationally recognized bluegrass/outlaw country sounds of Town Mountain (Asheville, N.C.), we should have a little something for everyone.
Rooster Walk is about more than just music, however. We’ve recruited a nice mix of arts and crafts vendors, in addition to some area non-profits, that plan to set up booths at the event. Speaking of which, we’re still looking for arts and crafts vendors. If you know someone that might like to set up shop, shoot an e-mail to roosterwalk@gmail.com
There will also be a bevy of food vendors to fill your stomachs, which will certainly need some sustenance after dancing all day! Other items on the agenda include a silent auction to raise money for the scholarship fund, and a “Kids Zone” that we hope to have up and running for all the little rug rats in attendance.
There are plenty of ways you can help us. For starters, we’re still in the fundraising process, since these incredibly-awesome music festivals don’t pay for themselves. On a cheaper note, we’re also looking for volunteers to help us during the festival. If you’re interested in donating some time, check out our “volunteers” link on this page.
Last, but not least, we need help promoting this thing. You can put up flyers, or you can just spread the word verbally or over the Internet. And of course, there’s always the old-fashioned arm bar, which is handy to use when tossing friends into the car on the way to Rooster Walk.
It’s all coming together folks, thanks in large part to the hard work provided by many of our friends and family. A big thanks to all of you. We can’t wait to see you there!
Welcome to Rooster Walk
February 19, 2009With spring in the air, so is the excitement of live music, fun in the sun, camping and good food – the festival experience. Penn-Shank Memorial is proud to announce the 1st annual Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival on May 23 at Blue Mountain Productions’ festival venue in Martinsville, Va.
Rooster Walk is a one-day, one-night event with loads of great music, arts, crafts, food and games for all to enjoy. Ranging from rock to bluegrass and reggae to funk, we’ve booked an incredible group of bands.
General admission tickets are only $20 in advance or $25 at the gate, and children 12 and younger are admitted free. Camping is available on-site for $10 per vehicle (be sure to carpool!), and we’re only minutes from town for those who prefer to stay in a hotel.
Rooster Walk was created to celebrate the lives of two Martinsville natives who passed away recently: Edwin “The Rooster” Penn and Walker Shank. These young men touched us in ways that will never be forgotten, and we hope to create an experience that would make them proud.
And don’t forget: The best part about Rooster Walk is that IT’S ALL FOR CHARITY!!! We’ve created an endowment fund to generate a yearly college scholarship for area high school students.
Rooster Walk can truly become a huge success with your continued support. Please consider opportunities t volunteer or make charitable donations.
It’s only weeks away, and when the Rooster crows, you better be there!
